This Site...What Is It?

Posted by Coach Mahurin at Jul 20, 2022 5:49PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

Judging by several of the e-mails I’ve been getting, that question seems to be rummaging around at the moment. This is simply my effort to communicate with players, parents, and fans. I hope it allows folks to feel like they are part of the program.

Do you need to “join” the web site? No…it’s just a canned site that I utilize. if you join, you might get reminders when I change schedules and make posts. That can either be good or bad! You can just drop in anytime you want and see if anything is happening.

I try to write stories about the games all of our teams play. Hopefully, here at Lincoln, I’ll be posting links instead because writing those stories gets pretty overwhelming. I know, however, how many grandmas, grandpas, and others like to follow their family members.

As a parent, I know how frustrating it got depending upon my sons and daughter to share things that were going on in their respective programs. There were countless times when things happened that my wife and I had no idea about because messages were forgotten.

If you ever have a question about anything going on, ask me. I try to be approachable. Be advised that I’m not always politically correct, and you may not get the answer you want.

In conclusion, most of our fans have always liked this site. I certainly try to communicate. I apologize in advance if I ever offend anyone in any way. I also apologize for the typos that will appear at times. I often post on the fly, and errors occur.

College Statistics

Posted by Coach Mahurin at Sep 19, 2018 11:10AM PDT ( 0 Comments )

I’ve had several of you talk to me about playing basketball at the next level. I’ve been very fortunate to have several players make it to the college court. However, I really want to caution you all to be realistic. NCAA D1 coaches usually come calling when you’re in the 9th or 10th grade. My last D1 kid committed after his sophomore year.

I’ve had kids play at every level. The most common level for kids to play is D3. Money is not great there. The D3 schools are usually very expensive, and no athletic scholarships are available. They’ll give you some money for academics, but it usually still costs more to attend a D3. You’ve got to love the game to go D3.

JUCO is an option that is less expensive and it still gives you the chance to get to the next level. It is usually economical. However, competition is high from those who struggle academically. This is where a lot of great athletes who have poor grades end up.

NAIA can be a good solution for some, but many of these teams are very, very good. NAIA schools in Indiana get D1 talent. The advantage to NAIA is more athletic money available than lower levels of NCAA.

Approximately 550,000 boys play high school hoops every year.

Of those 550,000 boys,
5.6% play in college (30,738 of 550,000)
.9 % play NCAA D1
.9 % play NCAA D2
1.3 % play NCAA D3
.8 % play NAIA
1.7% play JUCO

MY MESSAGE IS SIMPLE. DREAM BIG…GO FOR IT. BUT PLAYING AT THE NEXT LEVEL IS RARE. IF ANY COLLEGE TALKS TO YOU, LISTEN TO THEM!!! SWALLOW YOUR EGO AND BE THRILLED FOR ANY OPPORTUNITY.
