Just wanted to weigh-in on WTHI’s letting go of Rick Semmler for “financial reasons.” I’ve known Rick for decades since he worked with another great, Jason Pensky, at WTWO. Both guys are legends in my book.
However, I’ve never seen anyone work as hard to promote all athletes in the Wabash Valley as Rick has. Having worked in all corners of their coverage area, I can personally attest to his efforts to cover every end of the valley.
Not only was Jason a great sports reporter, but he is also a wonderful person. He’s caring, enthusiastic, and honest. I keep my list of friends in a very short string, and Rick is undoubtedly a friend.
Rick always treated me, my family, and my players fairly, even when the stories could be exploited.
Terre Haute was once my home and I defended it staunchly throughout the years. Letting Rick go is just another example of the travesty that seems to permeate the city. The decaying high schools, mismanagement of Indiana State University, and general corrosion of the town make me relieved to live elsewhere.
Rick was one of the few shining stars left in Sin City. I guess now they get what they deserve. It’s just too bad Wabash Valley athletes will suffer for it.
